Puff ran as fast as his short legs would carry him toward a different geyser. He managed to reach it before becoming food and threw himself onto it. The geyser carried him up, up, up, then flung him much farther than the other one had. This time there was no bush below him, just some oddly colored land and rocks. Puff closed his eyes and wondered how much it would hurt.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself on the rocks. Only they weren't rocks. He was on the back of the largest animal he had ever seen.
Puff decided that he was suffering a minor heart attack. He wasn't hurt, but the animal didn't seem to notice him. Was this the Hecogrin? If it was, than the lizard hadn't exaggerated when he talked about its size. The Hecogrin was running fast, chasing some animals that scattered quickly. Then the Hecogrin twisted, sending Puff flying. He landed in a tree, stuck in a fork between two branches. Puff twisted and turned, but only succeeded in getting himself more stuck. Well, at least he hadn't hit the ground. Puff was considering himself to be a very lucky Lookay. He caught sight of a bird seated on the tree next to the one that he was stuck in. "Could you please get me down?" he asked. The bird looked around for the source of the voice. When he spotted Puff, he said, "You're a Lookay, aren't you? You'd better wait until the Hecogrin goes away. He'd eat you if you got down now. He's still looking for some Lookays who might have returned."
Puff watched the Hecogrin run after the animals. He winced when the huge beast scooped one up in his jaws and ate it with a sickening crunch. Soon, though, the Hecogrin was out of sight, and the bird grabbed Puff and carried him to the ground. "I'd go back home if I were you, little Lookay," the bird said. How strange that every animal that Puff had talked to had said that. Well, not the aardavark. "I'm lost," Puff explained. "I got carried over here in that big storm yesterday, but if I can find the sea I will find my family."
The bird shook his head. "You must have been carried very far by that wind, little Lookay. There aren't any of your species around her for miles. They all scattered when that Hecogrin came here. You've got quite a ways to travel."

So is the Hecogrin a good guy or a bad guy?
ReplyDeleteNot really either. He's just this big animal that needs to eat to stay alive, and so he tries to eat Puff. No one's good or bad in this story.
